How It Works

From Initial Survey to a Practical Plan for a Greener Home

Improving the energy efficiency of your home can involve a surprising number of decisions. Solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, insulation, glazing, ventilation, EV charging and smart controls may all have a part to play, but it is not always obvious what should come first.

The APN Green Home Survey provides a straightforward process for understanding your property, identifying the opportunities and establishing a practical order for future improvements.

The process is designed around five simple stages: understand the home, assess the opportunities, compare the options, establish priorities and create a clear next-step plan.

Step 1 – Book Your Green Home Survey

The first step is to arrange your Green Home Survey and tell us a little about your property and what you hope to achieve.

You may already have specific improvements in mind, such as solar panels, battery storage or a heat pump. Alternatively, you may simply want to reduce energy bills, improve comfort or understand how to make your home more energy efficient.

Before the assessment we may ask for information such as:

  • the property address;

  • age and type of property;

  • existing heating and hot-water system;

  • any recent extensions or alterations;

  • existing solar or renewable-energy equipment;

  • improvements you are already considering;

  • approximate energy use where available; and

  • any future plans such as an extension, renovation or electric vehicle.

This helps us understand the starting point and the areas that deserve particular attention.

Step 2 – We Assess Your Home

The next stage is the whole-home assessment.

Rather than concentrating on a single product, we consider the different elements of the property that influence energy performance, comfort and future energy demand.

Depending on the property, this can include:

  • roofs, walls and floors;

  • insulation;

  • windows and external doors;

  • heating and hot water;

  • ventilation;

  • solar-panel potential;

  • battery-storage opportunities;

  • heat-pump potential;

  • EV charging;

  • air conditioning and summer cooling;

  • smart heating and energy controls; and

  • possible planning or design constraints.

The objective is to understand how the home performs now and where improvements may offer the greatest benefit.

Step 3 – We Consider How the Options Work Together

This is one of the most important parts of the Green Home Survey.

Home energy improvements should not always be considered separately. Insulation can influence heating demand. Solar panels can generate electricity for the home, while battery storage changes when that electricity can be used. EV charging and heat pumps may substantially increase future electrical demand.

We therefore consider how the different technologies and improvements could work together as part of one overall plan.

For example, the assessment may indicate that improving insulation should come before changing the heating system, or that solar panels, battery storage and EV charging should be considered together.

The aim is to avoid making one expensive decision today that makes another improvement more difficult or less effective tomorrow.

Step 4 – We Establish the Priorities

Not every possible improvement will be equally important and there is rarely a need to undertake everything at once.

We help establish which measures appear to deserve priority and which can form part of a longer-term programme.

This may include:

  • straightforward energy-saving improvements;

  • building-fabric upgrades;

  • renewable-energy opportunities;

  • heating improvements;

  • electrical and smart-energy upgrades;

  • measures that can sensibly wait until later; and

  • areas requiring further specialist investigation.

The result is a more manageable approach to improving the home rather than an expensive shopping list of technologies.

Step 5 – We Consider Costs and Value

Knowing that an improvement is technically possible does not necessarily mean that it represents the best use of your money.

Where appropriate, we provide an indication of the likely scale of investment associated with the improvements being considered.

This allows you to begin comparing different options and deciding where your budget may be most effectively used.

The figures are indicative rather than contractor quotations, but they can help distinguish between relatively straightforward improvements and larger projects requiring more detailed investigation and expenditure.

Your Green Home Recommendations

Following the assessment, the information is brought together into a practical overview of the property and the opportunities identified.

The recommendations are intended to help you understand:

  • what may be worth doing now;

  • what could be considered later;

  • which technologies appear appropriate;

  • where further investigation is required;

  • what may not be suitable for the property;

  • the likely order of improvements; and

  • any obvious planning, design or technical issues that should be considered.

The emphasis is on providing clear and understandable advice that you can actually use.

A Clear Next-Step Plan

One of the principal aims of the Green Home Survey is to answer the question: What do I do next?

Depending on the recommendations, the next stage may involve obtaining installer quotations, commissioning specialist calculations, preparing design plans or making a planning application.

In other cases, you may simply decide to begin with relatively straightforward energy-efficiency improvements and leave larger investments until later.

Either way, you have a clearer route forward rather than approaching different installers without an overall plan.

Obtaining Quotes for the Work

Once you know which improvements you want to pursue, you can begin obtaining detailed quotations from appropriate installers and contractors.

A clearer brief can make this process considerably more useful.

Instead of simply asking several companies what they think you should buy, you can approach the market with a much better understanding of what you are trying to achieve.

This can help you compare quotations more effectively and reduce the risk of being guided towards a product simply because it is what a particular company sells.

Where Planning Permission or Design Plans Are Required

Some green home improvements may require more than an installer.

Solar panels, heat pumps, air-conditioning units and other external equipment can sometimes be affected by planning restrictions, particularly on listed buildings, properties in conservation areas, flats and more sensitive locations.

Where the survey identifies a potential planning or design requirement, this can be investigated before you commit to the installation.

Design plans, planning applications, Building Regulations advice and other professional services can then be arranged where required.

Carrying Out Improvements in Stages

For many homeowners, the best green home strategy will develop over several years.

You might begin by improving insulation and reducing heat loss. Solar panels could be installed next, followed by battery storage or an EV charger. A heat pump might be introduced later when the existing boiler needs replacement.

There is nothing wrong with improving a home gradually.

The important thing is to have an overall plan so that the decisions made today support the improvements you may want tomorrow.

Planning an Extension or Renovation?

If you are already considering an extension, loft conversion or major refurbishment, this can be an excellent time to undertake a Green Home Survey.

Building work can provide opportunities to improve insulation, replace glazing, alter heating systems, install underfloor heating, introduce ventilation, upgrade electrics and prepare for solar panels, batteries, EV charging or other technologies.

Considering these opportunities before the building work starts can be considerably easier than trying to retrofit them afterwards.

Independent Advice Before You Spend

The Green Home Survey is intended to put independent advice at the beginning of the process rather than after you have already started obtaining quotations.

You do not need to know exactly what you want.

You do not need to choose a technology before the survey.

And you certainly do not need to install every improvement that is identified.

The objective is simply to understand the property, establish the opportunities and make better-informed decisions about where your money may be best spent.

Start Your Green Home Journey

The process is straightforward:

1. Book your Green Home Survey

2. We assess your home

3. We consider the different energy options

4. We establish priorities and indicative costs

5. You receive a practical next-step plan

From there, you decide what you want to do, when you want to do it and how far you want to take your green home improvements.

NEXT STEPS
